BLACK TANK TOP

Tank top, sleeveless shirt—this garment has many names, but you probably won’t have too much trouble recognizing it: in fact, chances are that you have at least one of these lurking somewhere in your closet already. As for whether or not you’d describe your trusty black tank top as a “fashion statement,” well, you probably wouldn’t. That’s okay, though, because the tank top was never supposed to be high fashion. The very first “tanks” were the one-piece bathing costumes that women wore to the pool, or “swimming tank,” in the 1920s.

Now, the tank top is another one of those building-block items that forms the basis of countless other outfits: while it may not be the most interesting item that you’ll ever buy, it could well be one of the most versatile.
